Swimming Crab
The Blue swimming crab is a fast moving crab. It has stalked red
eyes and grows to about 8 cms. It has a fine velvetish texture. It is mostly
found in the Arabic Gulf , Southeast Asia in the shallow waters of the stony and
rocky shores. The swimming crab is caught in creels and the number varies from
season to season. The Bahrain Sea has a lot of these swimming crabs. It also has
a great commercial value.
The Blue swimming crab is commercially very valuable. It is harvested throughout
the year from the tropical waters of Southeast Asia and Arab Gulf.
Sometimes, the crab meat is pasteurized and sold in order to extend the shelf
life. In Asia, the Flower crab is commonly eaten. It is a distinctive crab,
reddish yellow and light brown in color.

Blue Swimming Crab is
Carapace covered with scattered, coarse granules, and whitish or
pale-bluish irregular meshwork pattern, often with short but dense
pubescence between the granules. Clear mesogastric, epibranchial and
obscure metagastric ridges on the carapace. Front cut into 4 teeth.
Anterolateral margin of carapace armed with 9 spines. The last one is
largest, projecting laterally. Long and stout bluish chelipeds, 3.5
times longer than that of carapace. |
